Running faster doesn’t have to hurt. If you’re preparing for the Mai Dubai City Half Marathon and want to run faster follow these tips to improve your running speed without hurting yourself.

1. Warm up before you run.

Before you start running, warm up by walking slowly for 5 minutes. This will help loosen up your muscles and prepare them for the activity. Warming up properly has been proven to minimize the risk of injury. It increases tissue and muscle flexibility and prepares your body to perform fast and explosive movements. Plus, you are less likely to pull or tear a muscle. As an added advantage, warming up improves your mental focus and speeds up your reaction time.

2. Wear proper shoes.

If you’re not wearing the right type of shoe, you might end up with an injury. A good pair of running shoes should fit well, provide support, and allow you to move freely when training and even during the actual day of the Mai Dubai City Half Marathon. Running shoes are the only protective equipment runners have to safeguard themselves from injury. While they may not always make you run faster, they can help reduce pain and the repeated strain and stress of high-impact activity on the joints.

3. Don’t overdo it.

You don’t need to spend thousands of dirhams on a new running gear to run faster. Instead, focus on improving your technique. This will help prevent injuries and make you more efficient at running.

Maintain a consistent, easy running pace for a solid 8 to 12 weeks to increase aerobic fitness. This takes time and is a long term goal. Easy means easy and should feel comfortable, not hard and not taxing on your body. Overdoing it will just make you drained on the Mai Dubai City Half Marathon.

4. Focus on your breathing.

Breathing correctly is one of the easiest things you can do to improve your running speed especially during race day at the Mai Dubai City Half Marathon. If you’re not breathing properly, you won’t be able to push yourself as hard as you should. To breathe correctly, inhale through your nose while exhaling through your mouth.

5. Give your body time to catch up.

Injuries from increasing running speed don’t necessarily come from the speed itself, but from asking your body to do something that it’s not ready to do. Running faster means a change in cadence, the timing of muscle firing, and biomechanics. Therefore, you have to give your body time to adjust and adapt to the change in activity level. Don’t forget to schedule rest days to avoid drastic and sudden changes in your running habits that can cause injuries.
