Running is an absolutely fabulous sport. It’s relatively cheap and it doesn’t require learning a set of rules or other people to do it and it’s proven to boost your physical and mental health in all sorts of ways. “Create a sustainable training programme. It is important to set goals, whether it be distance or pace, and to train progressively to meet those goals. The condition of your body, weight and fitness levels play a major role in being able to meet your goals. It is best to do base training for about two to three months, doing a maximum of two speed sessions a week, but prioritise hill training before speed.”

“Focus on your efforts. We suggest focusing on running at the same pace whether you run on the flat ground or up hills. People often vary their speed so much that they fatigue themselves in a run. Focus on short, quick strides while you run so you do not waste energy on the up and downhill of your run.”

“Try not to overthink the race the day before. I don’t want to just sit still. I like to walk around and warm up about 50 minutes before the race starts as well as several drills to prepare for the race. For my warm up run, I generally do about 18-20 minutes starting very very slowly and for the last 3 minutes I push it into a sort of tempo pace to wake up my legs. After doing a few long strides before the start, I am ready to go”
