Running is an absolutely fabulous sport. It’s relatively cheap and it doesn’t require learning a set of rules or other people to do it and it’s proven to boost your physical and mental health in all sorts of ways. Whether you’re looking for motivation for the Mai Dubai City Half Marathon or you’re keen to give running a proper go then these tips from some of the best runners will definitely help you.
“Create a sustainable training programme. It is important to set goals, whether it be distance or pace, and to train progressively to meet those goals. The condition of your body, weight and fitness levels play a major role in being able to meet your goals. It is best to do base training for about two to three months, doing a maximum of two speed sessions a week, but prioritise hill training before speed.”– Nick Bester
“Focus on your efforts. We suggest focusing on running at the same pace whether you run on the flat ground or up hills. People often vary their speed so much that they fatigue themselves in a run. Focus on short, quick strides while you run so you do not waste energy on the up and downhill of your run.”– Dick Beardsley
“To become a good runner, you need to eat right, lose extra body, not smoke and avoid heavy drinking, get adequate sleep, and exercise often. The proper combo of diet and exercise plus preventative health maintenance can extend life by as much as 6 to 9 years.”– Sascha Wingenfeld
“The advice I have for beginners is the same philosophy that I have for runners of all levels of experience and ability: consistency, a sane approach, moderation, and making your running an enjoyable, rather than dreaded part of your life.”– Bill Rodgers

“Try not to overthink the race the day before. I don’t want to just sit still. I like to walk around and warm up about 50 minutes before the race starts as well as several drills to prepare for the race. For my warm up run, I generally do about 18-20 minutes starting very very slowly and for the last 3 minutes I push it into a sort of tempo pace to wake up my legs. After doing a few long strides before the start, I am ready to go”– Ballinger
“I started to try some longer distances and really loved it. I love the shorter distances. It’s really useful to have racing experience at shorter races as before you attempt to target your first marathon.”– Pezzulo
“Runners with a healthy, long-term approach generally go the fastest. This lesson eluded me in college when some of the women I competed with were tangled up in extreme or unhealthy behaviors for the sake of running fast. At the age of 30, I have now enough experience to know that the most accomplished and consistent runners are those with a long-game approach.”– Beck Wade
