Having great endurance is a valuable asset in running, especially when running a half marathon. Runners who build up endurance can run for longer distances without getting fatigued. Their bodies and minds have been conditioned to push past the voice in their head saying ‘Quit’. Without sufficient endurance, you’ll get tired and give up soon after you start. 

So exactly is endurance and why is it important when running during the Mai Dubai City Half Marathon at Yas Island Abu Dhabi? 

Endurance is how long an activity can be performed in total. It refers to cardiovascular efficiency. This is how well your heart, lungs, and muscles work together to distribute blood and oxygen around your body to sustain activity. Below are 7 tips on how to build half-marathon endurance: 

1. Start Slow and Tackle Small Steps 

Even if you feel ready to bump up your distance or speed, it’s a smart idea to go slow and aim to make incremental gains in your training program. This is especially true if you’re new to a regular running schedule. Remember that progress should be over many weeks, allowing time for recovery, but getting harder and harder. If you’re planning to join us on the 7th of May at the  The Mai Dubai City Half Marathon at Yas Island Abu Dhabi – slow but consistent training will help you be prepared for the event. 

2. Be Consistent 

To increase your aerobic capacity and improve your endurance to run a half marathon, you need to train consistently. Consistent training will build your aerobic base, increase your aerobic capacity and strengthen your muscles. When you begin to add extra runs to your week, they should be easy and slow – speed follows endurance! You should aim for 3 to 4 sessions per week for 30 minutes or more. Aim to make one of these sessions your long run where you plan to go farther than any of your other runs that week. 

3. Focus on Breathing 

Focus on your breathing during running can help reduce stress, boost your energy and increase your endurance. Usually, people hold their breath or forget to increase their breathing speed when running gets hard. If you are running faster, you need to breathe faster. Holding your breath can make you feel fatigued during your workout sooner than you should. Your breathing should increase from 15 times a minute while resting to 40-60 times a minute during running. 

4. Fuel Properly 

We always tell runners who join the Mai Dubai City Half Marathon at Yas Island Abu Dhabi to fuel up before their run. Not only does this mean that you need to eat but you also need water to keep yourself hydrated and energized. If you often feel like you’re lacking energy while you’re running, it could be because your body doesn’t have the fuel it needs to run well. Make sure you’re eating a healthy, well-balanced diet with enough carbohydrates so you have enough energy available for your working muscles. 

5. Add Some Strength Training 

Strength training helps your muscles and joints handle the stresses of running. You’ll be able to run longer before your muscles start getting fatigued. Even with just two or three 20 minute strength training sessions a week, you’ll build more muscle mass and notice a difference. 

You’ll also find that you’ll be more injury-resistant and recover more quickly from your runs. You don’t need any fancy equipment or a gym membership to incorporate strength training into your routine. Do some bodyweight exercises such as planks, squats, lunges, calf raises and push-ups after your runs to start building more strength. 

6. Join a Running Event

It’s very common for runners to experience soreness or stiffness after running. Maybe you’re training for the Mai Dubai City Half Marathon or you’re trying to increase your distance or intensity – it’s normal to feel sore the next day. Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) usually goes away on its own after a few days, but here are a few ways to help speed up the process. 

1. Do Some Light Movement 

Yes, we know it sucks but staying on your couch or bed and not doing anything is the worst thing you can do when you’re sore. This is because activity increases circulation, improving blood flow throughout the body. It’s thought that increased blood flow and nutrients to the muscle speed up the repair process which helps reduce soreness. 

This doesn’t mean you should go back to your regularly scheduled workout programming – we’re talking about gentle activities like going for a slow walk or stretches. Don’t do anything intense since you don’t want to do more damage to your muscle fibers.

2. Try Foam Rolling

Foam rolling is all about the myofascial release which relieves tension in the muscle’s connective tissue. If any of your friends or trainers mention that foam rolling is great for soreness, listen to them. Research found that rolling out your muscles like dough can help reduce delayed onset muscle soreness. It can also improve performance in subsequent workouts. 

Invest in a good foam roller and spend about 10 to 15 minutes with it each day. You can make it part of your warm-up, cool-down and on days that you don’t work out, part of your overall recovery.

3. Switch Up Your Shower Routine 

You’ve probably heard of ice baths before to reduce muscle but we suggest trying hot and cold temperatures instead. An unconventional method of muscle recovery is combining the benefits of both cold and hot therapies into one method. This is called contrast therapy. This works by increasing blood circulation around the injured muscle which can help heal post-workout inflammation faster than traditional cold therapy alone. 

4. Hydrate 

We know this sounds obvious but staying hydrated is an important aspect of muscle recovery. Water keeps the fluids moving through your system which eases inflammation, flushes out waste products and delivers nutrients to your muscles. The trouble is, it can be tricky to know if and when you’re dehydrated. Therefore, we suggest looking at the color of your urine. Medium or dark yellow signals dehydration while pale yellow means you’re hydrated. If you joined the Mai Dubai City Half Marathon, you may have noticed that we provide a lot of water across the route – this is because hydrating is important before, during and after running. 

5. Eat a Balanced Meal 

Eat a well-balanced meal 1 to 2 hours before or after your run. You’ll want to ensure that you get a well-balanced meal in your system. If you plan to run in the morning go with eggs, veggies, whole wheat toast, oatmeal, or yogurt to ensure that you have enough energy. For lunch or dinner, go with salad, sandwich, pasta or anything with high protein and a good balance of carbohydrates. This will provide your body with the final nutrients it needs to top off the recovery process. If you’re training for a half marathon in Dubai, having a balanced meal will be very crucial to be able to have the strength to finish your race.

We have great news! The Mai Dubai City Half Marathon will be back this 30th of October 2022! We can’t contain our excitement anymore! Are you ready for an even bigger and better Dubai Half Marathon? Here are five essential pre-race day tips to help prepare well and fully enjoy the Mai Dubai City Half Marathon. 

1. Familiarize Yourself With the Route Map. 

If you still haven’t downloaded the Mai Dubai City Half Marathon Route Map, do it now! Study the map to avoid getting lost during the event. Most importantly, identify where the starting line will be to ensure that you get there at least 30 minutes before the race starts. 

Before the race, it is also beneficial to visit the site and create a plan. Try to visit DIFC to know what to expect in terms of hills and elevations. This will help you craft a running strategy that will help you perform your best during the Mai Dubai City Half Marathon. 

Last but not the least, know where your friends and family will be cheering for you to help you prepare and look good in pictures! 

2. Don’t be stressed.

It’s normal to panic and feel nervous the day before running a half marathon. Try not to overtrain yourself the day before the race. Enjoy and relax at home. Read a book, go for a short walk, or watch a tv show. Don’t try anything new like new shoes, new food, new exercises a day before race day and stick with a routine that works for you. 

3. Hydrate (Water is Life!) and eat healthy.

Dehydration will be your biggest enemy during the event. Although the weather during the Mai Dubai City Half Marathon is not bad, it’s still important that you maintain good hydration. Everyone’s body is different. Listen to your body to ensure that you don’t become overhydrated which can also affect your performance. 

Try to avoid eating food with lots of salt. Eating foods that are high in sodium may lead to health conditions like high blood pressure. Instead, eat meals that are high in magnesium and potassium to help you stay hydrated and avoid muscle cramps. 

4. Prepare well and early. 

Have you prepared all your necessities for the Mai Dubai City Half Marathon? Have you collected your race pack? If not, go get it today. Today is the last day of the race pack collection from 12:00 – 19:00 in Gate Avenue Zone D, near Carrefour opposite Hair Creators Salon. Don’t prepare at the last minute to make sure you don’t forget anything important. It’s also crucial to review your travel arrangements to ensure that you arrive at DIFC on time. 

5. Get a good night’s sleep. 

The Mai Dubai City Half Marathon starts at 6:00 AM. That’s why it’s essential that you sleep early to be able to wake up early and arrive on time. Set an alarm to make sure that you have enough time to prepare. If you struggle to sleep the night before, try reading a book while laying down in bed and minimize your use of electronics to avoid blue light which can negatively affect melatonin.
